Hair Care for Your New Fall Color

Thinking about getting your new Martino Cartier hair color for fall? Once our professional colorists help you get the perfect shade, you’ll want it to last. Home hair care is important for keeping your luscious locks soft and your new color vibrant, so it’s important to follow some special tips to keep your hair color looking great all season.

Wait before washing. For most color treatments, there’s a waiting period between your salon appointment and your first shampoo. That’s because the coloring process opens your hair’s protective layer to let the color in, and it takes a little time before everything is sealed up again. Washing too soon can wash out some of your color, so ask your colorist when you can resume shampooing – the ideal wait time is usually at least 72 hours.

Use a sulfate-free professional shampoo. Once you resume washing, you’ll want to choose the right product. We recommend sulfate-free, professional products specifically formulated for color-treated hair. Sulfates and other harsh chemicals found in some shampoos can over-strip your hair’s natural oils that help keep each strand in great condition to hold your color. We always recommend using salon-quality professional products because their formulas omit unnecessary ingredients that can harm your hair. While they may seem more expensive, professional products are concentrated, so you use less.

Shampoo less often. If you’re shampooing every day, you may be damaging your hair even if you’re using the right products. Besides that constant shampooing that can overwork hair, you may be exposing your hair to too much heat in the shower every day, and heat can cause damage. Ask your Martino Cartier stylist or colorist to recommend the best shampoo frequency for your hair. For most of us, two or three times a week is all we need, and you can use a dry shampoo in between to keep it feeling and smelling fresh.

Avoid heat whenever possible. We’ve mentioned that shower heat can cause damage to your hair, so dial back the heat a bit and rinse in cooler water when showering. Avoiding heated styling tools whenever possible is also important since those apply searing heat directly to your hair strands. Look for hairstyles that allow you to skip or reduce time with flat irons and blow dryers. If heated tools are an absolute must for your style, use a professional hair protectant before styling to reduce the chance of damage.
